2020 Coronavirus Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Fund

About

The W.H.O. has declared COVID-19 a pandemic and public health emergency of international concern. Bright Funds Foundation has established the 2020 Coronavirus Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Fund. According to the Center for Disaster Philanthropy, supporting Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) are key to limiting the spread of any infection, especially those that are spread by close contact. Increasing access to WASH resources will help limit the spread of coronavirus and other infections. Supporting areas with poor access to medical healthcare means providing access to clean water for handwashing and other vital hygiene practices. This will help limit the spread of all viruses and other infections. Through a single donation to the Fund, you can support multiple organizations' initiatives to provide short-term and long-term response and recovery. Given the ever-changing nature of this pandemic and widespread impact, the composition of the nonprofits in this Fund may evolve. (Photo: WaterAid/Guilhem Alandry.)

WaterAid

The first line of defense against illnesses like COVID-19 is handwashing, but millions do not have access to clean water and soap. In the face of the COVID-19 threat, WaterAid is scaling efforts to improve handwashing and hygiene education in the 34 countries where they work. WaterAid has decades of expertise helping change people’s hygiene behaviors, starting with handwashing. WaterAid is an international nonprofit with a mission to reach everyone, everywhere with access to clean water, decent toilets, and good hygiene, within a generation.

Care

CARE is preparing an immediate surge in 18 of the most vulnerable countries, at a minimum cost of $200,000 per country. Their fundraising goal for a comprehensive immediate and long-term response is $30 million. Immediate priorities include: 20,000 hygiene kits – containing crucial items like soap and diapers – at $35 each and 10,000 handwashing stations – where people at risk of infection can practice safe hygiene – at $50 each. Their COVID 19 response draws on CARE’s experience like the fight against Ebola, SARS and cholera providing access to safe water, hygiene kits and hygiene education.

Water Mission

Water Mission will provide urgently needed safe water, sanitation, and hygiene solutions to under-resourced communities in developing nations.
